Letter from the Executive Director

As we reflect on events and changes at our organization, we realize what an incredible year it has been. We have experienced major changes in programming, structure and staff, the re-accreditation of our organization, the purchase and renovation of a permanent home for CAPA’s Closet, and a record number of children and youth in our residential facility, the Open Arms Shelter. Blessings have abounded, giving us encouragement and guidance as our board and staff have tackled tough issues on a road that has often been rocky and unsure.

Changes in the human services field, especially the care of children and youth, presented challenges which resulted in program adaptations. Our children’s emergency shelter, now in its 27th year, is now licensed as a Level One Group Home. While we still provide emergency shelter, we are now able to provide a wider array of services over a longer period of time. Our daily population has nearly tripled over the past year. Often, we have been at capacity. The incredible children and youth living at our facility display great courage and resilience to overcome whatever has caused their placement. Many arrive at our door after unsuccessful placements with other family members or friends. Some have given up on ever having their needs met. Our case planning starts before they arrive. Schools and pre-schools are contact-ed, uniforms and book bags are readied and, most importantly, a car-ing group of staff members and spe-cially trained volunteers welcome them. Tutors help them with school work. Volunteers bring fun through games, books and outings. Encouragement abounds and we have seen incredible results. Out of eight school-aged residents, most made honor roll this first quarter. They are proud of their results and so are we.

If you have not been in CAPA’s Closet, a true upscale resale shop located at 1340 Ribaut Road in Port Royal, please visit soon. Open Monday through Saturday, the new store is a real treat. Donations of new and gently used goods are accepted until 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday and until 1:00 pm on Saturday.

Another exciting change in our outreach programs is a permanent home for education and support. Our Parents Center, a meeting place for our classes and support groups, is located in a new building behind CAPA’s Closet. It is cheerful and roomy. If you need a space for a meeting, call us. We are pleased to share our facility upon availability.

Thank you for being part of the CAPA family, where a miracle happens every day. May your heart be filled with joy and celebration. Please visit our new website at www.capabeaufort.org to learn about ways that you can get more involved. Helping CAPA does your heart good and makes Beaufort County a better place for children and their families.
